2008 - The Year Ahead

Every year, I try to a review of the best albums of the previous year, and I also like to take note of what we can look forward to in the next year. This is the latter.

There seems to be less buzz about this year’s releases than last year, which isn’t surprising considering the names on last year’s list versus this year. For the below list, much is confirmed, some is rumored based on the artist completing or having completed studio work and moving into the final stages (including naming the album), and some is purely speculation based on tidbits here and there.

The below is a list of albums I am looking forward to.

Confirmed and Eagerly Anticipated

  • Massive Attack – was supposed to have been a 2007 release…

  • The Cure – was supposed to have been a 2007 release…

  • M83 – can’t wait!

  • The Mars Volta – The Bedlam In Goliath (01/29)

  • Flight Of The Conchords

  • Filter – Anthems For The Damned

  • Autechre – Quaristice (03/03)

  • REM – Accelerate

  • Gnarls Barkley – Atlantis (04/04)

  • The Roots – Rising Down

  • Portishead – I know…

  • Alice In Chains – what will this be like without Layne?

Confirmed But Not Eagerly Anticipated

  • Jack Johnson – Sleep Through The Static (02/05) – how about I just “Sleep through this album”?

  • Los Campesinos! – Hold On Now, Youngster (02/25) – I cannot understand the buzz around this indie-jingle-jangle band…

Rumored

  • Nine Inch Nails

  • Primus

  • The Streets (with actual instruments?)

  • Metallica

  • Helmet – they’re baaack….

  • Coldplay

  • Offspring – inside joke. “Hey, new Offspring!”

  • Green Day

Well, there’s still plenty to look forward to and I’m sure we’ll have as many surprises along the way, so, here’s to a great year!
